Always Alert, Always Safe!

“Our safety does not rest in the hands of one person or government agency alone. It rests in our very hands as we put them together on the concerted effort of building safer, adaptive and resilient communities.” said Sec Voltaire Gazmin.

A sudden slip on a fault triggers an earthquake. The tectonic plates are always slowly moving, but due to friction, they get stuck at their edges. There is an earthquake when the stress on the edge overcomes the friction that releases energy into waves that move through the surface of the earth and cause the shaking we feel. Ground shaking is rarely the cause of injuries during an earthquake. Most injuries and deaths associated with earthquakes are caused by collapsing walls and buildings, flying glass and dropping objects. As most accidents occur when people attempt to travel more than a short distance during the shaking, it is extremely important for a person to move as little as possible to reach the position of protection he or she has established.

It comes in the most unexpected times, anytime and anywhere. If you’re prepared when the catastrophe hits, being prepared will save your property and bring whole communities back to life sooner than would be possible. When you break it down, preparedness for disasters will save lives. While it takes some time to plan ahead, if you plan ahead, it will guarantee safety even in the worse scenarios. Being prepared can reduce the fear, anxiety and losses that accompany disasters. Communities, families, and individuals should know what to do in the event of an earthquake and where to seek shelter during a fire.

The NDRRMC conducted "National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill" in order to ensure that everyone is prepared when unexpected circumstances happen in a community. Every year they conduct this type of program to know the importance of our lives and to even let children and elderly be aware on what to do. Amidst the Pandemic, they still found another way to educate people by conducting webinars; More than 6,000 individuals registered in the webinar on earthquake preparedness launched by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) through Office of Civil Defense (OCD) yesterday, September 8, 2020 as part of the alternative activities for the 3rd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED). The webinar which recorded 34 thousands views is an online learning platform to educate and increase knowledge of the public on earthquake hazards, preparedness and response during pandemic.

"Ating isinasagawa ang mga aktibidad na ito upang patuloy na makapaghatid ng serbisyong DRRM sa ating mga kababayan sa kabila ng COVID-19 pandemic. Nais namin na tuloy-tuloy na matutunan ng ating mga kababayan ang mga panganib na dala ng lindol upang sila ay makapaghanda at maging ligtas," -NDRRMC Executive Director and OCD Administrator Ricardo Jalad
